Since the last post, we traveled out of St. Louis and across Missouri, then up to its northwest corner and into Iowa briefly, and finally into Nebraska. Plattsmouth, to be exact. Stayed with relatives in their very cool log house, where we saw wild deer and wild turkeys in the yard. The next day we drove again, across Nebraska, rising gradually toward the still-unseen Rockies.
One thing about Western Nebraska--lots of it smells like cow manure.
Used to be, this was the terminus of a lot of cattle drives--up to Ogalalla where they'd put the beeves on the train and send 'em east. Then the cowboys would get rowdy in town. We ate at the Front Street steakhouse, which is kind of a tribute to the old cattle-drive days. No cows visible in town, but you can smell 'em everywhere. We also notices that the air was less humid even than 400 miles over on the other side of the state.
This morning we got up and drove to Denver, getting here by noon. We visited the Museum of Nature and Science, two Mile High Comics locations (the first, on Colorado, sold out of Angel: The Curse #1 on the first day, while the second, the mega-store, still had some which I signed for them), and Tattered Cover, one of the biggest independent bookstores in the country, but a bookstore which is inexplicably out of all my books. Here's a hint, people--if they sell out, order more!
Tomorrow--into the Rockies.
