The phones seem to be working today (so far), but that's no guarantee they'll continue to.
Apparently one of our neighbors clipped a phone line with a backhoe on Tuesday knocking our service to an unknown number of the houses in our area. Because we're on dial-up, that eliminated phones, fax, and internet access. We're down in a hollow, so no wireless phone service either. Being cut off like that, in today's plugged-in world, is a strange feeling. The only contact from outside came via pony express--I mean, the US mail--and satellite TV.
The phone company got everything fixed on Wednesday, but then service went out again yesterday. I had to drive about 10 miles to get cell phone service to call them. Yesterday we upgraded our cell phones, but I still don't have service at the house (although I can get it up on the hill). Maryelizabeth seems to have limited service in the house, which is new and different.
